Third Level personal Preparedness (Go-Bags)> Duffle/Cargo
5.11 Tactical Outbound 40" C.A.M.S. Bag > Highly Recommended

Introduction :Third level Preparedness - Go-Bags>Duffle/ Cargo Bags
This section is dedicated to the analysis of some currently available options for portable carry bags that have the design distinction of a strap that's primarily designed to mount on the shoulder or across the chest and that are classified as Cargo Bags. Modern day Cargo Bags descended from the ubiquitous animal and machine mounted bags that date back over 1000 years ago. The current day classic is sometime erroneously referred to a 'Duffle Bag' - a close cousin. Cargo Bags are easily recognized by their rectangularity and almost stereotypical compartmentalization. The classic arrangement is a large horizontal compartment, flanked on its ends by much smaller pockets and most often also flanked on the sides by additional pockets. Thus the variants are either three, four or five regions of compartmentalization. The main compartment is almost always secured
by a 'U' shaped zipper. Cargo Bags allow for the stowage and transport of a huge range of goods with the key advantage being the range of sizes of content items that can be accommodated. They have found enormous favor with athletes, travelers, journeymen as well as professionals of all stripe. Materials range from leather, to canvas as well as a large range of woven nylon and fully impervious vinyl and rubber.

Key benefits: Large main compartment| Quick access to main compartment | Multiple sub-compartments for customized contents| 3-Way carry | Practical to stow in vehicles, boats or aircrafts| Excellent space to weight ratio| Ideal for hauling a lot of stuff in one container

General Description

The Cams 40" Outbound from 5.11 Tactical, is a MONSTER of a bag. It's truly a steamer trunk for the 21st Century. With a 40” main compartment, this bag will certainly carry all of your gear. 5.11 Tactical partnered with Viking Tactics™ to design a bag that’s oriented for the outbound operator. It needed to be big enough to pack armor, clothes, hardware and other gear, and rugged enough to survive transport when fully loaded.
The bag’s rigidity comes from removable fiberglass, snap-in struts. With the struts in place, the bag stands on either end without falling over. Name- tape and flag holders, markable name strips plus clear business card and document pockets make identifying your bag easier. The top compartment zips away from the bottom to reveal a large open compartment with built-in lashing points. Heavy duty, lockable YKK® zippers and compression straps pull it all together and help minimize the bag’s exterior dimensions. Imported.

Form Factor & Build -
Size- Extra, Extra Large
. Large enough to carry a wide variety of preparedness/response gear plus shelter and sleeping bags as well as a supply of apparel.
Geometry- Rectangular (rectilinear)
Material- Heavy duty Cordura nylon fabric and construction. YKK zippers throughout. Optional (included) internal structural fiberglass rod struts.

Ergonomics- May be single person or two-person carried via hand grips at the top-center and at both ends. It is ideally wheeled over flat surfaces, reducing and mitigating user effort and strain. It is essentially a sophisticated, soft-sided foot locker or 'load-out' bag that maximises available stowage while maintaining durability with a minimum of weight and bulk.

Affordances- This is a multi-tiered, multi compartment container, allowing for excellent flexibility both in the configuration of internal space as well as the distribution of contents. It is fundamentally two-levels, a top main compartment that is divisible symmetrically or asymmetrically via three stiff dividers . A lower compartment allows for the segregated stowage of contents, such as apparel, shoes, hardware and so forth. Five side-mounted and one top mounted compartment continue the gradation of stowage logic- allowing for specialized segregation of belongings or equipment.

Human Factors & Usability -The Cams 40" Outbound conforms to most heuristics guiding good user-centered design in the industrial engineering of a carry case. In other words, the need for effective, efficient and easy to learn functionality are fully accommodated through sound consideration of the cognitive, reflexive and contextual aspects of this product's use. From the point of view of matching the engineering and fabrication to the user's expectations and the anticipated contexts, the Cams 40" Outbound meets all the necessary requirements. This is a carry bag that's designed to hold enough gear for one - tree persons for
between 72 hours and one week's duration. It's uncomplicated and serves the purpose of reducing the need for multiple pieces of luggage well. The incorporation of huge wheels -integrated into the case, make the Cams 40" Outbound one of the most rugged wheelable luggage solutions that we've seen to date. It's obvious that fully loaded with tactical gear, it's easily carried single handed. However, if much heavier gear, such as electronics and hardware are involved, the operator/user will be relieved by the wheeling option for Cams 40" Outbound mobility.

Styling and Aesthetics
The Cams 40" Outbound has all the gutsy appeal one associates with professional tactical gear and as such it posesses the aesthetics that are sought out by professionals and civilians seeking the best built travel gear products available. Form follows function in that no space is gratuitous and the Cams 40" Outbound lacks superfluous adornment, edges or appendages that could easily be sheared off by baggage handling equipment, runway carts or military cargo transports.

Environmental Stress- We evaluated the Cams 40" Outbound under somewhat abusive circumstances. The toughness of the fabric was well suited to aggressive brushes with rough but not sharp cutting metal surfaces such as those that might be encountered in an evacuation, outdoors or in less than the most civilized of settings. It fared very well in scuffs against concrete, automobile doors, steel emergency stairs, trees, thorns and an array of surfaces one might encounter in an evacuation. Our experience traveling by car with the Cams 40" Outbound has taught us respect for it's construction quality and use of materials. To test the un-protected zippers, we subjected Cams 40" Outbound to an unattended 10 minute shower-No water was discovered inside . We attribute this to the effectiveness of a zipper over flap as well as the use of impervious Nylon Cordura fabric.

Target Market- While the Cams 40" Outbound is intended for use by tactical operators, soldiers and technicians of all stripe, it is also extremely suitable for any and all applications that call for a heavy duty, un-armored but moderately crush resistant pice of luggage that can endure the harshest of travel circumstances. As such it should be adopted by professional first responders, investigators, disaster relief and EMS/EMT service professionals as well.
Any civilian would be very well served by adopting the Cams 40" Outbound, as it's a caliber of luggage that you can travel with and live out of for a stretch of a year or more.

Evaluation Results & Summaries

Ease of Use
Excellent. The user simply loads contents according to individual or task requirements. Smooth zippers are easily opened and closed thanks to the easily grasped pull cords. The design of the Cams 40" Outbound invites objects to be loaded in a manner that promotes good balance if the bag is carried horizontally and with the heaviest objects at the end that would become the bottom in a backpack carry attitude. The handy interior pockets allow for stowage and organization of smaller objects. The clear exterior map/document pouches are as easy to access as any Velcro seal. The Cams 40" Outbound is not intended for long marches, but the very fact that it offers a decent back pack carry method, makes it far easier for one person to carry than might otherwise be possible.
------------------
Task performance optimization
Very Effective. The Cams 40" Outbound is ideal for carrying a very large load of mixed contents. It's not advised that it be used for hauling very dense objects such as a mass of canned goods for example. From the point of view of the evacuee it is effective for carrying a combination of clothes, some water and dry foods, lightweight shelter and sleeping bags plus a mix of emergency necessities.
------------------
Accommodation for emergency provisions
Excellent. The most important emergency preparedness passengers riding in the Cams 40" Outbound are likely to be clothes, shelter, bedding and critical respiration protection. In addition, a couple of helmets and several pairs of rugged boots may also be hosted inside. The interior pockets are intelligently arrayed along the sides and the end of the bag, while useful document pockets containing maps / vital information are accessible and visible on the outside without requiring that the bag be opened for viewing. A well planned emergency evacuation strategy would see evacuees using the Cams 40" Outbound as a home evacuation bag-loading smaller modules plus season relevant components into it in the time available prior to an actual evacuation. This said, the Cams 40" Outbound can probably reside inside a building and be located as close as possible to the most egress friendly exit. Last minute clothes may simply be carried to the Cams 40" Outbound, before its loaded onto a vehicle. For SAR/CERT responders, a Cams 40" Outbound could reside in the trunk of a car or larger vehicles, and be pre-loaded with the necessary emergency response gear or relevant modules. It should be noted that the Cams 40" Outbound is an all purpose type of luggage- capable of limitless application in many domains of end use.
