Headlamps & Flashlights

Headlamps & Flashlights, are a subset of > Illumination and are discussed in the section
Second Level Personal Preparedness because the ability to illuminate a path or to search for persons or materials in low light or darkness is essential to survival as well as for successful rescue operations. In the case of headlamps, they leave the user's hands free to grasp and perform tasks. Flashlights are also an essential component of a Go-Kit and Go-Bag in that they allow for both hands free as well as hand held and self-supporting illumination

The following are some features of head-worn lights that we deem to be important enough to consider.

- Reliable and not prone to failure
- Provide at least 8 hours of illumination before requiring a recharge or battery replacement
- Rugged enough to withstand the abuse that may be associated with dire emergencies.
- Comfortable enough to wear on one's head without distracting the wearer or endangering an operation
- Easy to activate and to switch modes (if applicable).

The key advantages of Head worn lights are:
- Leave hands free to perform tasks
- Mitigate loss from accidental dropping
- Are able to point light in the direction of line of sight
