Protection
We tested the toecaps by dropping various objects onto the toes while a live user was wearing the boots.
So as not to overly damage the surface leather, we overlaid a protective sheet of Kevlar matting for the trial. We dropped a 2"X4" piece of lumber from 4' height and this was not felt by the wearer. We also poured 5 bricks onto the wearer's feet and they were not felt either. A 1.5" diameter iron rod weighing 25Lbs was dropped onto the toe region from 4' and it was felt as a jolt but the wearer experienced no injury or pain in the toes. The toe cap seemed to deform by about 1/8 " but didn't break.
- No electrical isolation tests were performed.
- No efficacy in high heat situations were performed
- We tested the sole against Gasoline, Kerosene and Battery Acid and found it to be resilient and non-reactive. No further chemical tests have been performed.
Fit & Ergonomics
- The boot is most effectively and quickly donned when prepped by having the laces loosened and the boot opened up. Indeed, we found that the most efficient prep involved placing the 9" socks partly inside the boot to speed their donning. Once a foot is inserted into the boot, the lacing up process involves a deliberate and somewhat laborious tightening at the center and then up at the top. Given that the lace structure creates a fairly conforming grip on the ankle and calve, this method proved to be the most effective at lending support.
- Removing the boot was as one might expect- typical and unremarkable, with a gradual untightening of the laces from the top and progressing towards the ankle.
Then we tested 'out of the box' comfort.
- These boots are very comfortable out of the box. We attributed this finding on the nylon fabric structure with leather panels as well as the fact that the soles had enough 'give' to them to allow the foot to flex normally in climbs and in descents. The user reported no pinching, binding or sore-spots. One other reason may be that the boots were deliberately sized 1/2 size above the wearer's street shoe size. He wears an 8.5 street show and the boot we tested was a 9. This allowed us to try an array of socks specifically designed for trekking as well as tactical operations. Such socks tend to be designed with significantly more padding in the toe as well as at the heel. The Size9 was even still a tiny bit too large with these socks. To fill the 'gap' further, 8" REI Trekking sock liners were employed. The result was the ultimate in comfort and support for the user. The padded sock liners, inside of the heavy trekking socks and finally surrounded by the inside of the boot- created a cocoon of massive shock isolation, moisture management and comfort.
Waterproofness
To test waterproofness we allowed our subject to wade into a kiddie pool filled with 6" of water. Not a drop of water was discovered on the inside of the boot after a 10 minute wade.
We also tested the boots during a deep woods simulation that involved some wading through creeks, that case we used chaps that added a additional 6" of protection to the 8" boot. The chaps were effective in mitigating the entrance of water and mud over the scree.
- Drying the boots seemed to be quicker than non-Gore-Tex styles. We attribute this to the natural breathability of Gore-Tex. Moisture build up is common on the inside of boots in the winter. Through the use of intelligent moisture management socks coupled with the breathable properties of the Gore-tex, along with the use of gaiters, we managed to keep the 7744's quite dry even in the least hospitable of torrential Springtime downpours.

Matterhorn 7744:  Mens 8” Waterproof Leather and Nylon Mach with Non-Metallic Safety Toe

Summary Comments:
The Matterhorn 7733 is a premium quality waterproof boot that is specifically intended for use by SAR operators. Loosely derived from the 'Vietnam Jungle Boot' it combines the foot protection afforded by a shanked and toe-capped leather foot, combined with a highly flexible and waterproof 8" upper. This combination allows for surefootings while scrabling in urban debris or for traversing mountain terrains.- The aggressive tread of the 7744 was very effective in giving excellent purchase over gravely terrain as well as through muddy surfaces. It fared very well over hard asphalt as well. Though it's more bother to clear mud and debris out of the treads, the benefit of such a tread over the smoother type tactical boots is worth the added maintenance required.
- The 7744 seems to satisfy the key requirements of search and rescue professionals in scenarios of mixed urban and mountain situations. Scrambling over the debris of demolished homes they provide the needed flexibility for a sure footing combined with sufficient puncture and abrasion resistance to mitigate injuries that might occur from brushing against structural materials. Stepping on fractured masonry proved to be no issue and small nails failed to penetrate the sole. In mountain scenarios the support offered by the 7744 was effective for comfortable and secure scrambling over gradients of up to 30º with a 40lb 3-day pack. Though not intended as a trekking boot for use with heavy loads over many days, the 7744 was just effective enough to provide the necessary ankle support to manage a 3 day pack with no risk of injury due to ankle rotation that one might associate with light weight 'jungle' type boots. In addition, it provided enough flexibility to be pressed into service as a climbing boot for rope rescue situations.

Comments: The 5.11 Brand Tactical Socks are intended for use by tactical operations professionals that wish to have zoned padding that is intended to absorb the shock of constant pressure between toes and heel and the relevant boot regions.These are in fact 'duty' socks for operators. In addition, the fabric blend and weaves are specifically calculated to combine general support with zoned support and wicking properties.
Unlike heavy duty trekking socks, the tactical socks are not necessarily intended for persons that must carry a heavy pack for long distances over rugged terrain. Effectiveness: In the correct size for the intended user, the Dickies 6 Pocket EMT Pant is practical as well as comfortable.We tested them in four seasons and found them to be comfortable in all but the hottest and most humid climates.The use of Poly/Cotton fiber blend, combines comfort and moisture management with 'wash & wear' practicality. Because they are not cinchable, they are less than perfect for tactical or rugged terrain applications- where debris, mud, snow and wind may easily crawl under the pant cuffs.

Comments: Better than leather with the same look, touch and feel of premium hide.For the citizen or any professional that requires stylish accessories that can go from board room or staging base to the epicenter of an emergency the Liger Belt is one of a few belts that can withstand the rigors of an abusive experience unlike any leather or nylon weave that we've ever tested. The hook-in-hole design is tried and true having been used by professional cowboys , ranchers and rodeo professionals for over a century. Liger updates this time honored design with a more aggressive hook, making for a nearly failsafe attachment. We tested the Liger belt by suspending our 170lb subject by rope, from a bar 6' high. Even with a rope looped around the belt at the buckle it remained very much attached. Though not intended as a 'last chance' instructor type rappelling belt, it's reassuring to know that in the event of a natural or manmade emergency the Liger belt will not let its wearer down. The Liger possess the better qualities of top grain cowhide without any of the drawbacks of leather. In 6 weeks of continuous use the belt maintained it's dimensional integrity even after being repeatedly soaked, baked and frozen in ice. We twisted it, whipped it on concrete and stomped on it in an effort to inflict some damage but nothing beyond a mere scuff could evidence the substantial torture we subjected these belts to. Furthermore they manage to carry the assorted heavyweights of the law enforcement arsenal with total effectiveness and aplomb. Full sized pistols in an assortment of holsters, plus holsters for cuffs, batons, magazines - all managed to ride high and dry while the Liger belt never sagged, deformed or stretched.
Liger belts are sold to accommodate exact belt sizes and then add a generous 6" of allowance for wider waists. Round 3/16" holes are punched at 1" intervals. Because the extra length or 'tag' slips underneath the overbelt, there is no visible flap- making for a sleek elegant profile with no chance for an accidental snag.
The heavy duty Aluminum Alloy buckle is small enough to be unobtrusive and yet it possess all the necessary heft for a solid hook-up. We tested the black belts with both the Titanium Gray hard anodized as well as Black hard anodized finishes. The fabrication quality of the buckles alone were worth the price of admission.
