Description
The
Vortex TR3 is a diminutive member of the police, security
and tactical light categories. Being significantly
shorter and more compact than the average light in
this class, it is more easily stowed and carried than
the longer and fatter flashlights. Unlike other Luxeon
LED competitors however, the TR3 uses a LuxeonIII
3W emitter instead of a 5W LED. Thanks to a highly
efficient reflector formulation, it manages to nearly
match the brightness and throw performance of it's
nearest competitor the Space Cannon vH DELUX, while
requiring less power and having an emitter life-span
that is 10 times longer than the 5W LED. In fact,
the beam brightness and profile of the TR3 is nearly
identical to that of the Night Ops Gladius- while
offering a more neutral LED BIN color into the bargain.
In keeping with true form with other tactical lights,
it sports a Momentary & Full On tactical click
for On/Off tail switch that is recessed. As a result,
the TR3 bridges the gap between full sized security
/ police lights and the typically more compact and
weapons mountable tactical lights. The fact that the
tail switch is recessed means that it is usable in
table-top ceiling bounce mode. Unlike its competitors,
the TR3 takes a different approach to battery charging.
Two batteries are included with every TR3 package,
allowing for one battery to be charged in the supplied
external charging station, while the other can be
in use or at the ready inside the flashlight itself.
As with other lights in its class, the TR3 is supplied
with a USA 110/220V AC adapter as well as a 12V Automobile
plug. To top off an already impressive package, the
TR3 comes with an excellent heavy duty Cordura nylon
holster that is clearly accommodating to belts up
to 3" wide. The TR3 is an extraordinary package
that is made even more attractive by the inclusion
of a stunning presentation box- making it an ideal
gift.

Evaluation Results & Summaries
Ease of Use
Excellent. The user simply locates and depresses
the On/Off switch button at the tail end of the light
to turn the light On and Off in a similar manner to
current day tactical lights. Focus is fixed at the
point of maximum spot. Charging involves the removal
of the nearly depleted or partially depleted battery
from the light and its placement into the charging
station. An Orange LED color on the station indicates
that charging is occurring. When the battery has neared
a 90% charge the LED changes color to Red. At 100%
charge the LED then becomes Orange. The color of the
indicator light therefore provides charge status information.
The light is easy to handle especially by persons
with smaller sized hands. It may be perched upright
on a flat surface for hands-free ceiling bounce mode.
Even though the TR3 is easily stowed in a pocket,
luggage, glove box or elsewhere, the included belt-mounted
holster represents a convenient manner of carry especially
in body worn rapid deployment applications. The use
of NiMH battery means that the TR3 will passively
loose about 1 minute of runtime per/ day but because
NiMH batteries don't have memory issues that are typically
associated with NiCad batteries, it may easily be
topped off for regular nigly use or in the event that
it hasn't been used in a long time.
5 points
------------------
Task performance optimization
Excellent. The Vortex Vision TR3
is a top contender in the LED subclass of Police/
Tactical / Security lights. It lacks superfluity and
provides a very bright and useful combination type
beam of extremely neutral color for most tasks occurring
at up to 180' feet away. Because it's compact, that
means it's more like be stowed where the larger lights
may not have enough space to live. We tested the TR3
in typical search scenarios that included room clearing,
vehicle inspection as well as the MDOI trial that
attempts to measure how far away a black garbage may
be positioned before a light cannot differentiate
it from it's surroundings. In most case the TR3 performed
admirably. Unlike the more amber colored incandescent
types, white LEDs tend to scatter airborne particles
such as pollen, dust and water vapor. Such a shortcoming
was easily remedied with the attachment of a (not
included) amber/yellow filter to the front lens. The
inclusion of a lower power setting would make the
TR3 an even better package than it already is.
4.75 points
------------------
Documentation Quality
Satisfactory. The instruction booklet is
Quadri-lingual for English, Spanish, French and German
reading customers. It's written and illustrated in
precise, concise and professionally laid out step-by-step
sections that enhance optimal information absorption
and that minimize mistakes. Typographic font size
is much smaller than average size , making it difficult
for persons with poor eyesight to read.
3 points
------------------
Battery Charging (Ease, Frequency, Maintenance)
Excellent. Even though the battery must be
removed from the light in order to charge it, the
process is as familiar as the replacement of expendable
batteries. The dual battery option ensures that the
light always has a freshly charged battery in it even
though another may be in the process of charging.
The L3's runtime of 1.5 Hrs per charge (to 50%) is
quite respectable considering average nightly use
and with a second battery at hand or nearby, that
means that around 2 hours of nearly full brightness
can be realized from a set of batteries. With only
occasional use, the TR3's set of batteries can easily
last several years of recharging cycles- making it
a very economical product in the mid to long term.
5 points
------------------
Balance, Grip-ability, Stow-ability, Tabletop Stand-ability
Good. The TR3
handles well in most hands and especially well in
small hands. The obvious shortness in length coupled
with the tail-end switch, makes it a viable tactical
light in applications that employ the Surefire/Rogers
or Harries hold positions. The light stows
quickly an deploys quite quickly from the included
nylon holster. It's an ideal candidate for stowage
where larger lights simply will not fit such as :
Automobile door pockets, glove boxes, tool boxes, tactical
bags and so on.
