Description
The Space Cannon vh - DELUX is an Italian made entry into the elite class of police and security type lights from a company that realizes most of its revenue from the design, fabrication and sales of architectural illumination products that use LED's. The DELUX is an R&D product that is available as a custom order item in mass quantities.In the pre-production model we evaluated, we noticed a striking resemblance in aesthetic design, heft and handling to the venerable MAG lite. The DELUX is highly innovative and in addition to sporting a neutral BIN LuxeonV (5W), also is wired with sophisticated circuitry and software. The DELUX's electronic switch resembles the MAG switch but through a gentle touch toggles between High power, Lower power. Slow flashing and Off. At any stage of activation from Off a full hold of the switch puts the DELUX into a rapid strobbing mode of the same frequency as a contemporaneous product, the Night Ops Gladius (BlackHawk Industries). Another innovation is the use of a rechargeable lithium Ion battery instead of the usual NiCad or NiMH . The Li-Ion battery is not only very small but it requires very little time to 'top-off' the cells (15 minutes). A typical feature of this battery chemistry is that the light will hold its charge for months encouraging long term un-tethered storage. The helical reflector focusing system is similar to other such lights but its not cammed- meaning that it's focusable between spot and wide-angle only once.

Evaluation Results & Summaries

Ease of Use
Very Good. The user simply locates and depresses the On/Off switch button to turn the light On and Off in a similar manner to the venerable MAG. Focus is adjusted from a tight hotspot to a wide anomalous beam through a helical turning of the bezel. Battery replacement is not user accessible. Charging simply entails the insertion of the charging cable connector into the socket at the tail end of the light. A Red/Green indicator light flashes the two colors alternatively to signal that charging is indeed occuring.The color of the indicator light provides status information. Red/ Green alternating= Charging, Steady Green = 100% charged. Because the charging connection protrudes slightly from the tail-piece, the light may not be stood upright on its tail for a ceiling bounce style of illumination indoors. It is stowable head down as are all the lights in this class.

Task performance optimization
Excellent. The Space Cannon vh - DELUX is a viable contender in real world security and police work in the LED class. Not quite as capable of delivering a mist cutting beam as far as it's brethren, it nonetheless provides a very bright, wide-angled combination beam that should make it popular with police and security professional working primarily indoors. The strobbing feature is a useful non-lethal compliance tool that extends the functionality of the DELUX. To conserve energy and to better match output to context , the low output setting gives the operator added flexibility. The focusing reflector allows for a better adjustment of spot focus to match the distance of the target from the light. Beam output is magnificent- a very wide and bright corona is pierced by a respectably wide hotspot that reaches out to a phenomenal 160'. The slow strobbing feature on the pre-production sample we reviewed seemed less than very useful and could be eliminated- reducing the steps from Off to Off by 33%

Excellent. In very few words the documentation manages to convey the important details of the charging of the Space Cannon vh - DELUX. The rest is very intuitive. The user manual is available in English, Italian, French, German and Spanish

Battery Charging (Ease, Frequency, Maintenance)
Excellent. The manual is clear and consise in intructing users on charging the DELUX. After the initial 6 Hr charge, the DELUX only needs a mere 15 minutes to top it off after one hour of use at high power. The charge status indicator light starts by flashing alterately Red and Green and then stays a steady Green when a full charge has been reached. Overcharge protection is built right into the light's circuitry. Since the battery charges while inside the light, replacement is almost a non-issue. It would be useful if customers could remove the battery in the event that it fails and needs to be returned for service- allowing for the use of a back-up battery in the interim.

Balance, Grip-ability, Stow-ability, Tabletop Stand-ability
Excellent. The DELUX handles exactly as does the 2D MAG-Lite but it's lighter in weight. Grip is satisfactory on the sometimes slippery low-profile knurled surface. It will not stand up on its tail in ceiling bounce mode.
