Description
The
LED Lenser LL7459 is a current interpretation of the
classic incandescent flashlights of the past years.
Though it somewhat resembles and represents a generic
flashlight shape, it uses an LED instead of an incandescent
bulb and it employs a
computer designed collimating optic rather than a
reflector. Most conspicuous is the use of billet or
bar stock Stainless Steel for a manufacturing material.
This puts the LED
Lenser LL7459 into two categories. It's
both functional and decorative with decorativeness
being more heavily weighed since in fact it has the
heft one would associate with a paperweight or sculpural
art object, rather than with a lightweight flashlight.

Evaluation Results & Summaries
Ease of Use
Excellent. The user simply locates and depresses
the steel click On/Off switch button to turn the light
On and Off. Focus is fixed by the collimating optic
to a spot with a square shaped corona. Battery replacement
simply entails unscrewing the tail piece in exactly
the same manner as if one were replacing batteries
on a standard CR2 light. Charging simply entails the
removal of a protective rubber plug from the charging
connector socket and the insertion of the cable connector.
An indicator light signals that charging is taking
place. The color of the indicator light provides status
information. Red= Charging, Green = 50%-90% Charged
and Orange = 100% Charged. Because the tail-piece
is flat, the light may be stood upright for a ceiling
bounce style of illumination indoors. In most cases,
the light may be stowed head down on a flat surface
or it may be carried in the included dedicated belt
holster designed specifically for that purpose.
This holster provides some environmental
protection while at the same time it permits the operator
to use the light without having to remove it.

Task performance optimization
Fair. The LED
Lenser LL7459 is primarily a decorative gift
item that happens to be an excellent flashlight using
cutting edge technology for both a source of illumination
as well as. Due to its mass and weight it's
not as practical to carry as other lights
in this category. In addition- though effective, the
photon management system of using a collimator, provides
illumination that though useful at medium ranges;
falls short of other lights that may have even less
powerful emitters. As such it may be described as
an exquisite compromise between aesthetic elegance
and practicality

Battery Charging (Ease, Frequency, Maintenance)
Excellent. Even without a manual the user
will manage to divine the necessary procedure for
charging with no effort at all. The changing color
of the charging status light requires only one time
vigilance in order to know that it changes over the
course of the charging duration. The NiMH battery
holds as much energy as that of another light of the
same form factor and conforms to the characteristics
associated with NiMH battery chemistry. In other words,
it looses some energy passively but because it does
not exhibit 'memory' it may be topped off and doesn't
require a discharge to alleviate memory issues.

------------------
Balance, Grip-ability, Stow-ability, Tabletop Stand-ability
Fair. The LED
Lenser LL7459 surface finish is the satin like
sheen one associates with brushed, stainless steel.
While this provides an acceptable grip surface for
a bare handed operator under dry conditions; it's
less than optimal for contexts that may involve moisture,
oiliness or grease. This is especially true given
the mass of the LED
Lenser LL7459. It does live happily on a desk
top or as a part of interior furniture and thanks
to a flat tailpiece; makes a fabulous ceiling bounce
illuminator

Items of Note:
The LED
Lenser LL7459 is the sort of product one gives
to someone to commemorate a special occasion. It equally
makes a fine example in any collection of technology
products, modern or machine age art or unique flashlights.
There are few examples of flashlights this large made
from solid stainless steel bar stock, and the LED
Lenser LL7459 may even be unique in this respect.
