Description
The
Streamlight Ultra-Stinger is an alternative to the
classic benchmark flashlight of a similar form factor.
The Ultra-Stinger uses a unique switch cover and charging
occurs through a connection via a charging cradle.
As is customary with many such lights, a 12V DC cigarette
charging adapter in included in the package.
The Ultra-Stinger bears some similarity to the venerable
'Cop' light of it's same length but in many ways it
is different. One advantage of owning a Ultra-Stinger
is that it is substantially lighter in weight due
to the fact that it uses a Sub-C type battery pack
rather than a D type pack as so many other do. This
makes the Ultra-Stinger an ideal option in circumstances
that call for a lighter weight flashlight. The lighter
weight Ultra-Stinger reduces the burden of the male
as well as female operator. In addition, the narrower
diameter handle makes it easier for smaller handed
individuals to manipulate the flashlight. Of all the
lights of this type that we tested, the Ultra-Stinger
delivered a beam further than the rest.

Evaluation Results & Summaries
Ease of Use
Very Good. The user simply locates and depresses
the click On/Off switch button to turn the light On
and Off. A partial pressing allows for momentary On
activation. Rotating the helical screw head allows
for adjustment of beam angle from a spot to a wide-angled
beam. Battery replacement simply entails unscrewing
the tail piece in exactly the same manner as if one
were replacing batteries on a traditional flashlight.
Charging simply entails a firm push of the light's
head into the dedicated cradle. An indicator light
signals that charging is taking place. Because the
tail-piece is flat, the light may be stood upright
for a ceiling bounce style of illumination indoors.
In most cases, the light may be stowed head down on
a flat surface or it may be carried in dedicated belt
accessories designed specifically for that purpose.
The rather 'forward' situated and head mounted
switch made acquisition a bit slower than the best
in class light. In addition, there is potential for
tactile confusion between the switch and the charging
contact during situations of high duress.
4.5 points

Task performance optimization
Excellent. The Ultra-Stinger provides a practical
source of bright hand-held illumination for contexts
that demand a combination type beam that is able to
pinpoint a subject at distances from a couple of meters
to nearly 325' as well as provide a broad disc of
context revealing illumination that makes such lights
a perennial favorite for navigation, search and tactical
applications. Being of respectable length, heft and
weight, the Ultra-Stinger also doubles as a nightstick
or club for defensive or police applications. Because
it's rechargeable, the astute user may always have
a substantial amount of brightness and runtime at
their disposal and at a moment's notice, Because batteries
are charged while inside the lights, repetitive removal
of batteries is unnecessary- eliminating a potential
source for risk, wasted time and component loss.
The Ultra-Stinger is the best value in terms
of throw /Dollar for those customers that must have
the furthest throwing Police type flashlight with
the least amount of weight and heft.

Battery Charging (Ease, Frequency, Maintenance)
Charging set-up and procedure are easy. Frequency
of charging will depend on the user but since the
manufacturer recommends charging after each use, the
customer doesn't have to monitor re-charge cycles
too closely. A caution is made to not over discharge
the battery (running it down flat) and
to remove the unit from the charging cradle if it
hasn't been used in a month. Unlike flashlights that
use NiCAd batteries, the Ultra-Stinger is furnished
with a NiMH or Nickle Metal Hydride pack instead.
This type of battery doesn't exhibit the 'memory'
issues associated with NiCad batteries, however they
do loose about 1 minute of runtime per day in storage.
Since they are designed to be charged on a regular
basis, this isn't a noticeable drawback. There are
two contacts on the head of the Ultra-Stinger that
mate to two contacts inside the cradle. The connection
is positive but requires attentiveness.
4.5 points
------------------
Balance, Grip-ability, Stow-ability, Tabletop Stand-ability
Good. The Ultra-Stinger performs in a practical manner
to be immediately available to its user whether it's
placed head up or tail up on a table, head up in a
belt carrier or otherwise stowed in luggage. The shiny
knurled grip surface provides satisfactory traction
in most cases but may become slippery when wet or
covered with oil. The light balances one inch fore
of it's midpoint. As mentioned, it's a delight to
hold since it accommodates small hands as well as
heavily gloved hands. It simply doesn't have the heft
of a D type flashlight making it burdenless to carry
all day long. The wider headed Ultra-Stinger could
complicate stowage somewhat and it's really too wide
a head to stuff into one's pants pocket, but that
may be easy to overlook if maximum throw is the key
requirement.

Items of Note:
The Ultra-Stinger's bulb design includes
a dedicated base that interfaces with a seating in
the bezel. This approach ensures that the bulb is
perfectly centered inside the reflector. The result
is that once centering is thus achieved, the bulb
is positioned to deliver an optimized beam from the
dedicated reflector. Many lights that use bi-pin base
bulbs lack this self-centering feature, making them
time-consuming to center by eye.
