Description
The
MAG Instruments 6V Rechargeable flashlight is a direct
descendant from the 3 X D cell MAG Police type flashlights
used by police and security as well as civilians the
world wide. The rechargeable continues in the blood
line of the MAG D-cell lights by conforming strictly
to the signature form-factor and proportions of the
original while making significant changes in details
that relate to both the bulb assembly as well as the
addition of a charging contact collar. By evolving
into a rechargeable format the MAG 3D style light
sheds its dependence on disposable alkaline or very
expensive disposable lithium batteries in exchange
for the discipline of regular charging maintenance.
The added flexibility of being able to charge from
both an A/C source as well as from a 12V DC connection,
makes the rechargeable option practical for the frequent
user as well as being considerate of the environment.
The MAG Rechargeable also uses a custom made (Welch
Allyn) 10W Halogen bulb that balances maximum output
and throw with relatively long life.

Evaluation Results & Summaries
Ease of Use
Excellent. The user simply locates and depresses
the click On/Off switch button to turn the light On
and Off. A partial pressing allows for momentary On
activation. Rotating the continuously 'Cammed' head
allows for adjustment of beam angle from a spot to
a wide-angled beam. Battery replacement simply entails
unscrewing the tail piece in exactly the same manner
as if one were replacing batteries on a standard MAG
lite. Charging simply entails a firm push of the light's
head into the form-fitted cradle. An indicator light
signals that charging is taking place. Because the
tail-piece is flat, the light may be stood upright
for a ceiling bounce style of illumination indoors.
In most cases, the light may be stowed head down on
a flat surface or it may be carried in dedicated belt
accessories designed specifically for that purpose.
5 points
------------------
Task performance optimization
Excellent. The MAG Rechargeable provides
a practical source of bright hand-held illumination
for contexts that demand a combination type beam that
is able to pinpoint a subject at distances from a
couple of meters to nearly 100 meters as well as provide
a broad disc of context revealing illumination that
makes it a perennial favorite for navigation, search
and tactical applications. Being of formidable length,
heft and weight, the MAG Rechargeable also doubles
as a nightstick or club for defensive or police applications.
Because it's rechargeable, the astute user may always
have a substantial amount of brightness and runtime
at their disposal and at a moment's notice, Because
batteries are charged while inside the lights, repetitive
removal of batteries is unnecessary- eliminating a
potential source for risk, wasted time and component
loss.
5 points
------------------
Documentation Quality
Excellent. The instruction booklet is Tri-lingual
for English, Spanish and French reading customers.
It's written and illustrated in precise, concise and
professionally laid out step-by-step sections that
enhance optimal information absorption and that minimize
mistakes. Typographic font size is an average size
and in a style that is easily readable. Hints and
Caution Warnings are clearly labeled and positioned
to be easily noticeable.
5 points
------------------
Battery Charging (Ease, Frequency, Maintenance)
Excellent. Based on a procedure described
in the instructions, the charging set-up and procedure
are easy. Frequency of charging will depend on the
user but since the manufacturer recommends charging
after each use, the customer doesn't have to monitor
re-charge cycles too closely. A caution is made to
not over discharge the battery (running it down flat)
and to remove the unit from the charging
cradle if it hasn't been used in a month. In the past,
NiCad batteries required a strict maintenance procedure
that involved running the battery down and recharging
them fully to circumvent the 'memory' effect. The
current crop of NiCad batteries don't require this
step. Like most rechargeable batteries however, the
MAG's NiCad's do benefit from a few initial charge/discharge
cycles in order to 'break them in' for optimized capacity.
5 points
------------------
Balance, Grip-ability, Stow-ability, Tabletop Stand-ability
Very good. The MAG rechargeable performs in a practical
manner to be immediately available to its user whether
it's placed head up or tail up on a table, head up
in a belt carrier or otherwise stowed in luggage.
We've spotted more than just a few MAG lite rechargeable's
sticking out of trouser pockets and peeking out of
tactical bags. The vast majority are stowed on their
chargers- keeping them topped off and out of the way.
The knurled grip surface provides satisfactory traction
in most cases but may become slippery when wet or
covered with oil. The light balance perfectly at it's
midpoint.
4.75 points
------------------
Items of Note:
The MAG Rechargeable's intense hotspot results
in a highly effective illumination of subjects as
far as away as 250' - while the smooth wide-angled
beam covers a large section of near to far context
environment that may surround the intended target.
At a distance of 0-50' , it becomes an effective,
if less than lethal compliance and defense tool. For
workmen and professionals that demand a bright and
reliable flashlight, the MAG Rechargeable is highly
recommended. Because the incandescent light produced
by its Tungsten filament bulb is a warm 3,400ēK ,
subjects are more easily seen and paths navigated
in darkness- especially outdoors. Though color differentiation
at very close ranges is not as perfect as one might
experience while using a daylight balance source,
the amber tint makes general vision easier for darkness
adapted eyes.
