Form Factor & Build
|
1-Classification-
The , P20 / M60L are medium
sized handheld tactical flashlights.The P20 uses a 1W Luxeon
LED emitter powered by 2XCR123A Lithium batteries and the
M60L use a 5W Luxeon LED also powered by 2XCR123A Lithium
batteries. These two lights are the cornerstones of the NightCutter
line. They are both within the category of tactical lighting
in that they have a momentary function and they use high flux
or output emitters for a source of light. The M60L is furnished
with a generous series of accessories that make it an especially
excellent value as a package. Beyond their use as tactical
lights- the unique metallic blue anodizing coupled with a
'Modernist/Machine Age" dimpled surface pattern push
these products into the realm of flashlight as sculptural
art. Moreover, their unique color makes them superb matches
for the nautically inclined. In contrast to the land warrior
Olive Drab or 'OD' color used for many military type lights,
the NightCutter P20 & M60L are quintessentially the mariner's
choice for matching the apparel of the ensign , admiral or
recreational captain. They are in this respect, true to their
flagship monikers.
2- Geometry- The lights are a radially symmetrical
cylinder.
3- Build Quality- The P20 / M60Lare
precision manufactured by CNC machine process. There is no
threading roughness, and the quality of aluminum used is T6
Aircraft Duralumin type.
4- Physical Features - Both these lights
look like they belong in a collection at the Museum of Modern
Art . Rather than follow in lock step the leads of many other
designers competing in this market space, the NightCutter
designers have departed from the norm and have instead painted
a daring stroke with their fascinating elongated lozenge shaped
troughs . They are intermittently and circumferentially cut
with a milling tool into the otherwise plain and smooth metal
surface of the light. This design pattern not only gives the
P20 and M60L a unique look, but it also substitutes large
pattern gripability for the customary knurling so commonly
found on other flashlights of this category. In most cases,
such a strategy highly advantages users that may encounter
very wet conditions or who may be using these lights with
slippery hands.
5- Wall Thickness- The aluminum wall thickness
of the battery tube is 2mm.
6- Finish- Anodized Type III Metallic (PMS
5405MC-Metallic) on the outside and throughout the inside.
This anodizing should be effective against corrosion.
7-Fit- There is no 'play' or rattle anywhere
in the P20 / M60L lights. Satisfactory 'O'
ring seals at all junctions between sections provide, a snug
fit and a seal against the elements- especially water. The
front lens and reflector/optics are easily accessible by unscrewing
the front bezel. Threading action is sufficiently smooth. |
| Ergonomics
& Mount Options |
1-
Laterality Dominance. The flashlights are ambidextrous.
2-Switch Activation The P20 / M60L
allow for single-handed On/Off operation through the use of
a twist for On/Off tail cap switch. Momentary mode is activated
by a less than 1mm pressing on the tail cap when the light is
barely Off. This allows for simple non-mechanical/electrical
activation, a highly failsafe option to the standard Kroll type
click switches. This light may be held in any number of ordinary
as well as tactical grip styles including forward, pointing
up or down, Harries or Surefire/Rogers.
3 -Loss Prevention/Stowage- A generously large
diameter lanyard hole accommodates split rings greater than
.5" in diameter or lanyard cord that is up to 5mm in diameter.
An optional nylon neck lanyard with breakaway safety is available
separately but is included in the M60L package . In addition,
the P20 / M60Lare both furnished with massive
nickel plated stainless steel pocket clips that are both removable
as well as garment friendly. |
| Affordances |
1-Controls- in normal use, light emits from
the front of the flashlight when activation occurs through
a either a partial pressing or a full clockwise turning of
the dual function tail cap. There is no focus adjustment so
this is the only control affordance that needs to be used.
2-Component/Section Accessibility The front
bezel section is threaded to the body section, allowing for
easy access to the enclosed LED module as well as allowing
the use of optional modular optics and reflectors. In the
case of the M60L additional bezels may also be attached instead
of the standard one. The LED module is easily removable at
the factory thanks to the use of two tiny allen screws
( Note: Lifetime Warranty may be voided if customers choose
to perform repair, maintenance or upgrades to their lights).
The optics or reflector and front lens may be removed and
interchanged between the two lights. Bezels are not interchangeable
however.
3 The removable tailpiece protects the battery
compartment from the environment by a single 'O' ring and
allows for battery replacement. Contact pressure is furnished
by a coiled spring in the head rather than in the tailpiece.
The tail caps and head have rubber gaskets as well as teflon
rings to ensure that seals prevent water from entering. Though
both these lights were tested as water resistant, they're
not depth rated for diving. |

Factors & Usability |
1-Deployment-
The P20 / M60L’s simple geometrical
shape suggest that they may be easily stowed and deployed
in a manner similar to other such lights. They easily slide
in and out of pockets and their clips handsomely perch the
lights on the edge of even the finest uniform or gent's trouser
pocket. The NightCutter P20 / M60L On/Off
functionality is simple to activate and follows the use model
of many similar lights of this caliber. It should be noted
that the energy and throw required to momentarily activate
these lights can be as little as 1/2mm making them an excellent
choice in circumstances where the heavy tail switch pressure
demanded of other tactical lights may not be required. The
second advantage that the NightCutter P20 / M60L
have in this switch approach is that they may be securely
placed tail down on a flat surface for ceiling bounce mode-
a useful option for creating a general diffused canopy of
light.
2-Basic Use Model . The switch is at the
tail end rather than at the head.
3-Changing 'States'- Focus is fixed at the
optimal beam angle produced by the matched reflector or optics. The
switch functional model is standard and since there are only
three states, it's easy to learn
4-Usage Options The P20 / M60L
are lights that can be carried or stowed loosely in a pocket
or compartment, or they may be attached to a tether through
their sizable ring holes. |
| Beam
Quality & Characteristics |
1-Beam
Characteristics-The standard P20 optic creates
a narrow and squarish spot beam, The M60L is furnished
with two optics and one reflector, allowing it to cover three
illumination angles> 10º,30º and 90º. The reflector supplied
with the M60L creates a soft and even beam that is preferred
for close proximity navigation.
2-Color compared to 5,400ºK (Daylight) Pure,
consistent and neutral white- even tonality with no anomalies
or chromatic gradations. This makes them useful for navigation/search
as well as forensic, tactical and general nocturnal use- calling
for a medium to bright output flashlight. Color differentiation
is superb.
3. Recommended Filters -None for normal use
/ Full CTO or Amber for nautical over water applications
4-Context of Use The narrow standard optic
is ideal for maximum throw coupled with high power close up
inspection. The wide fresnel optic increases the context window
and the reflector broadens the beam to the maximum for general
area illumination revealing the maximum context - especially
at close ranges. Thanks to their punchy Luxeon emitters, both
lights are bright and focused enough to create very bright direct
ambient room lighting in a small to average sized room and still
deliver a bright light through hand-held or hands free table
standing ceiling bounce mode (18'X12' white ceiling + white
walls).
5-Ilumination Window Category The P20
/ M60L creates a subject illuminations in both Context
Inclusive as well as Context Exclusive Illumination Windows
(CIIW) (CEIW) (*5)
6-Usage Scenarios. Tactical applications /
General personal illuminations / Heavy duty outdoors use.
7-Throw-To test the throw of the
P20 / M60L, we conducted a Maximum
Distance for Object Identification or MDOI (*2)
trial and managed to confidently differentiate our test subject
(a Black 33 Gallon (124Litre) Trash
Bag) from its immediate surroundings, from as far away
as125 feet (M60L) 145
feet(M60L) using the narrow beam optics
on both and with the subject area in near total darkness and
the evaluators and flashlight in a moderate level of street
sodium vapor ambient lighting (RH=10% at 40ºf). This test simulated
a person searching for an object of known size -a person for
example- but located in an unknown or difficult to spot container
-a black trash bag, for example. |
| Conclusions |
1-Summary Comments-The
P20 / M60L are an excellent
pair of 'Flagship' luxeon products from a company that has built
its reputation through manufacturing fine special and general
purpose 5mm LED flashlights. These two lights are a superb pair
for personal use or to give as gifts. Their exceptionally neutral
premium LEDs as well as exquisite aesthetic design, fit and
finish should make them attractive to customers jaded by the
sameness of competing products currently on the market. By making
the optics and reflector interchangeable, Lightship Enterprises
has made it possible for customers wishing to own both these
fine products to mix and match optics and reflector- thereby
extending their value further. The accessory crenellated bezel
of the M60L gives it an added functionality as a non-lethal
compliance tool.

(*2) Maximum Distance for Object
Identification (MDOI). The maximum distance that
a person without the aid of magnification-can with normal
or corrected vision, under a given ambient level of light,
identify an object of known size, and clearly distinguish
it from its surroundings. We have tentatively identified the
following scenarios for such measures:
- A single average sized person/body identification scenario
- Urban (city, inside buildings, dark alley, lit streets)
- Rural (countryside,farm residential backyard)
- Environmental (dessert, woods, wetlands, over water)
- Natural & manmade disaster (fire, flood/mudslide,earthquake,
hurricane /tornado,bombing scene, collapsed structure
etc)
- Small Inanimate Object (smaller than a shoe-box)
- Medium Inanimate Object (Black Plastic 33 Gallon (124Litre)
Garbage Bag stuffed with a big sleeping bag)
(*3) Usability testing results - in progress.
(*5) Context Inclusive Illumination
Window (CIIW) as compared with a Context
Exclusive Illumination Window (CEIW)
.
- CIIW describes a subject illumination
paradigm wherein the illumination target is the focus of
the beam's brightest disc or 'Hotspot' and peripheral objects
to the target are more dimly illuminated in a larger disc
that surrounds the focus or hotspot. This outer region is
also referred to as a corona or penumbra.
- CEIW describes a subject illumination
paradigm wherein the illumination target is the focus of
the beam's brightest disc or 'Hotspot' and peripheral objects
to the target are not sufficiently illuminated
to be easily discernable at the periphery
of subject beam's focus or hotspot.
