Form Factor & Build
|
1-Classification- The Medium 360º
is unique in that it provides a permanently flexible 'gooseneck'
extension that allows the user to position its head separately
from the orientation of the body. As such, the Medium
360º is an ideal product for shining light into tight
crevices and around corners in a manner that's beyond the
means of flashlights that don't have such capabilities. It
is in fact the middle sized member of a group of such lights
from LED Lenser. As such it is really a specialized illumination
device that may nonetheless be used in a fashion similar to
other small flashlights. Being a single AAA battery user,
it allows for inexpensive and easily accessible replacements,
making it economical for individuals that may use such a product
regularly.
2- Geometry- it is radially symmetrical cylinder.
3- Build Quality- The Medium 360º
is made of brass that has been matte Nickel plated. These
is mass production high quality light that is suitable for
light duty everyday or occasional use.
4- Physical Features -The Medium
360º has substantial heft and is thus less likely
to end up on a baseball cap or the breast pocket of a fine
dress shirt .It would be appropriate for a journeyman's work
shirt, or any professional's outer gear. It would also be
the ideal type of illumination for anyone that must peer into
and inspect labyrinthine equipment such as computers, electrical
boxes and so on.
5- Wall Thickness- The aluminum wall thickness
of the battery tube is .5mm.
6- Finish- Matte nickel plated Brass. The
use of brass makes it sturdy and gives it a feel that one
associates with solid objects.
7- Fit- The tailpiece fits well with some
roughness of threading but with no play whatsoever. |
| Ergonomics
& Mount Options |
1- Laterality
Dominance. The flashlight is ambidextrous.
2-Switch Activation The Medium 360º
is activated by a firm pressing of the 8mm diameter black click
switch button- located at the fore of the body section. This
micro switch button is covered in a protective black elastomer-
making it water resistant . A gentler pressing allows the light
to be turned on momentarily. 3-
Battery Changes are effected through removal of the
tailpiece from the body section.
4-Loss Prevention/Stowage-A plated removable
spring steel pocket clip allows it to be used in a pocket or
other such manner.
5-Handling. The Medium 360º
handles well- 'pointing' easily. The flexible gooseneck allows
for a fairly accurate positioning of the head with between 0"
and .5" of spring-back.Contrary to it's name, this light
does not allow for a true 360º of range of motion, but it does
allow for a about 320º in a nearly spherical axis. |
| Affordances |
1-Controls- The side click On/Off switch
button is the only control devices. The flexible neck is positioned
by the user's hand .There is no provision for locking the
head in any position.
2-Component/Section Accessibility Only the
battery compartment is accessible.

Factors & Usability |
1-Deployment
The Medium 360º’s form factors
and size suggest that it may be stowed and deployed in a manner
similar to other lights of this category. It is sold in an
attractive presentation case that contains a black high density
insert- precut so that the light may be stored in a 'U' shape.
This insert may be removed in order to stow the light in another
host container if desired.
3-Changing 'States'- Focus is at one relatively
omni directional setting. There are no other settings for either
focus or intensity.
4-Usage Options The Medium 360º
is clearly a 'problem solver' type of illumination tool for
people that must inspect, craft or repair. We did discover
that it also makes an excellent reading light- either clipped
to the cover of a book or the center spread of a magazine.
Because it has a flat tail-piece, the Medium 360º
may be stood upright on a flat surface with the gooseneck
positioned downwards. It may also be laid down on its side
for a multitude of other applications. |

Quality & Characteristics |
1-Beam
Characteristics-This light produces a soft edged medium
wide beam.
2-Color compared to 5,500ºK (Daylight) -5,000
ºK (approximate)
3. Recommended Filters - N/A
4-Context of Use -cornering and peering inside
other wise inaccessible small spaces - especially within machines/equipment.
5-Category The Medium 360º
creates a subject illumination in a category that we've codified
as Context Exclusive Illumination Window (CEIW) as compared
with a Context Inclusive Illumination Window
(CIIW)(*5)
6-Usage Scenarios. Anywhere a flexible neck
light is needed.
7-Throw-Maximum Distance for Object
Identification or MDOI-Confidently differentiate our
test subject (a 3.5"X4.5"Black Wallet) from its immediate
surroundings (black asphalt street), from as far away as 10
feet. This test simulated a person searching for a
known object of known color/tone that may be difficult to distinguish
from its surroundings in ambient light.
8-Percieved Brightness . Average for a one
Nichia type LED lights in its size category. |
| Conclusions |
1-Summary
Comments-The Medium 360º is a well
crafted mass produced flashlights from a reputable manufacturer
of personal illumination tools. It is an elegant problem solving
tool for consummate inspectors and repair persons working
in tight and cramped spaces.
2- Outstanding features:
- Excellent fabrication quality
- Sufficiently bright beam for its class
- Competitively priced
- Good aftermarket support
- Common battery type
- Handy flexible gooseneck
- Stylish design and gift worthy packaging
3-Value. Good quality to price-point ratio.
4-Areas Cited For Improvement A) Deserves
to be offered with a tiny inspection mirror attachment B)
The side switch may be slow for some to use and requires more
pressure to activate than some may like.
4.5 Stars-Highly Recommended

(*2) Maximum Distance for Object
Identification (MDOI). The maximum distance that
a person without the aid of magnification-can with normal
or corrected vision, under a given ambient level of light,
identify an object of known size, and clearly distinguish
it from its surroundings. We have tentatively identified the
following scenarios for such measures:
- A single average sized person/body identification scenario
- Urban (city, inside buildings, dark alley, lit streets)
- Rural (countryside,farm residential backyard)
- Environmental (dessert, woods, wetlands, over water)
- Natural & manmade disaster (fire, flood/mudslide,earthquake,
hurricane /tornado,bombing scene, collapsed structure
etc)
- Small Inanimate Object (smaller than a shoe-box)
- Medium Inanimate Object (Black Plastic 33 Gallon (124Litre)
Garbage Bag stuffed with a big sleeping bag)
(*3) Usability testing results - in progress.
(*5) Context Inclusive Illumination
Window (CIIW) as compared with a Context
Exclusive Illumination Window (CEIW)
.
- CIIW describes a subject illumination
paradigm wherein the illumination target is the focus of
the beam's brightest disc or 'Hotspot' and peripheral objects
to the target are more dimly illuminated in a larger disc
that surrounds the focus or hotspot. This outer region is
also referred to as a corona or penumbra.
- CEIW describes a subject illumination
paradigm wherein the illumination target is the focus of
the beam's brightest disc or 'Hotspot' and peripheral objects
to the target are not sufficiently illuminated
to be easily discernable at the periphery
of subject beam's focus or hotspot.
