Description
The
Havis
Shields-35W HID & 100W
Halogen search lights are a sibling
pair of hand-held searchlights that share the same
reflector and 'chasis' but which are otherwise different
products with differing power-trains and bulbs.
These lights are both powered by 12V DC sources-the
primary method being to connect the terminal Cigarette
Lighter plug, into the socket of an
automobile. Alternatively, a portable battery with
a Female Cig socket connector may also be used for
roaming use. Unlike the run of the mill handheld searchlights
and lanterns, the HS35 & HS100 are totally enclosed
in a heavy duty casing of hard rubber like material
called Elastomer. This makes them industrial looking
and lends to thier simple practicality. The HS35 uses
a 35 HID lamp that only draws 3 Amps to put out 3,200
Lumens. In contrast, the HS100 uses a Halogen bulb
that puts out 1,800 Lumens at 8.5 Amps. This in theory
means that the HS35 is much more efficient. Even still,
the HS100 has a unique property that gives it an edge
for certain applications. Both products are intended
to be used near a motor vehicle where they can illuminate
a worksite or important target distances of between
200 and 400 meters. An accessory shoulder carried
battery pack untethers these lights for convenient
use away from a motor vehicle.

Evaluation Results & Summaries
Ease of Use
Excellent. The user simply locates and depresses
the Click for On/Off switch button on the left side
near the handle, to turn the light On and Off in a
similar to many battery powered lanterns. Focus is
fixed at the point of maximum spot. Charging the optional
battery pack involves the insertion of male connector
of the wall adapter into the female connector on the
battery pack. Handling the light is easy thanks to
an excellent mid point balance and a convenient 45º
angled handle. The design of this pair of lights allows
for at least three comfortable hand held positions
in addition to two flat surface positions. Clamps
and other attachment solutions may also be used to
support the lights via their handle. There is no tripod
bushing or other attachment connector. Because there
is no way to change focus or brightness, these lights
lack any superfluous controls- making their use self-evident
enough for almost anyone to divine, without a manual
or instructions.

Task performance optimization
Throw-HS35HID = 12'Diameter
Hotspot at 400 Meters (MDOI)
Throw-HS100HAL=
6' Diameter Hotspot at 300 Meters (MDOI)
Good. Both these lights throw a punchy combination
beam at distances that far exceed what one might achieve
using a Police type flashlight. For illuminating subjects
at a great distance or located in very dark caverns
or caves, these lights are effective. The Halogen
is most effective at overcoming the 'washed out' colors
that users tend to perceive when using a near daylight
source in a context when the ambient illumination
is dim or non-existent. In addition, the Amber/Straw
hue produced by the HS HAL 100 is preferred for piercing
haze, fog or smoke. In circumstances where an efficient,
cool-running and long lived bulb are paramount, the
HS HID 35 has the upper hand. Both lights benefit
from the use of the accessory battery pack for applications
that would preclude the use of an extension cable
to connect the lights to an automobile's battery .A
fully integrated set of lights that piggy-back onto
a battery pack could be a welcome development for
customers that would rather not deal with any cabling
at all.

Documentation Quality
Good. The instruction booklet is regionalized
(English- as evaluated) . It's written and illustrated
in precise, concise and professionally laid out step-by-step
sections that enhance optimal information absorption
and that minimize mistakes. Typographic font size
is ideal and diagramming is highly professional. Being
in 8.5"X11" format it's not very pocketable-
only serviceable.

Balance, Grip-ability, Stow-ability, Tabletop Stand-ability
Very Good. Though both these light use an identical
casing, the HS HID 35 is heavier due to it's dependence
on a Ballast. Nonetheless, they are both very easy
to manage with bare or gloved hands. Wet or oily hands
will welcome the 'grippy' rubber surface and perforations
that run the length of the handle. Both lights prefer
being perched on their bellies and
pointed straight ahead, though flipping them over
allows for a serviceable ( if precarious) 45º up angle-
useful in changing a vehicle tire, looking underneath
a vehicle or even illuminating a building.

Excellent Customer Relationship Management
| Battery pack may be awkward for some applications
| Straight cable versions could be welcome options
