The SMJLED is a custom modified 5mm LED that starts with a typical integrated optic which is hand or machine ground so as to change the optical characteristics of the emitted beam pattern from a narrow angle to a much wider angle one instead. This results in a angle of around 170º - nearly hemispheric. When such an LED is then coupled with a parabolic reflector, the resultant beam angle changes to being around 85º. In addition, depending on the size and exact formulation of the reflector, the photons may be more efficiently marshalled into a brighter corona and hotspot.
As they are currently used, the SMJLEDs are most typically inserted into MAG Inc® Mini-MAG-Lites ( AA & AAA) as well as in the venerable Streamlight® Keymate® (Read our Keymate review >). Some practitioners have also successfully modified other similar lights using SMJLED as well as it's pre-cursor, the MJLED.

The benefits of using this 5mm LED in the ubiquitous pocket and keychain lights are:
- It's a relatively inexpensive upgrade that capitalizes or pre-existing popular lights
- Unlike power hungry Luxeon LEDs, the SMJLED needs much less power which results in a very long battery life.
- Existing Xenon bulbs that are used deteriorate quickly, draw power inefficiently and put out very amber artifacted beams. The SMJLED upgrade is very long lived, draws power very efficiently and puts out a white smooth beam pattern that lacks artifacts.
- When used in place of the stock LED that comes in the Streamlight® Keymate®, the MJLED capitalizes effectively on a very good and under-utilized stock reflector and with a better reflector, makes the most of this tiny light.
- In addition, the SMJLED modified Streamlight® Keymate® puts out a smooth far throwing beam that more than doubles the capability of the stock light.
- When properly installed, the 'focusing' capability of the Mini-MAG Lite is retained.

Evaluation Results...

We've been using the MJLED since they first came out and have since inserted them into several keychain lights- including the Streamlight® Keymate®. The first generation of MJLED generate less than 1/2 the output of the SMJLED as well as being around 5000ºK color output. This first generation was still as remarkable improvement over the power-hungry and inefficient Xenon incandescent bulbs in use in the Mini-MAG Lites for over 20 years. The MJLED V2 increased output by about 150% and then replaced the warm color with a nearly neutral white light instead. The SMJLED seems to produce a hotspot about 2.5 times the diameter of the MJLED V2 emitter, while generally putting out twice the overall lumens for what seems to be ten hours longer!
When used in the Keymate and christened the TurboLight, the SMJLED turns this keychain light into the smallest and most cost effective pocket light on the market at the current time. When cost and weight are factored together, the TurboLight outshines anything currently available on the retail market.
This type of emitter may well be the 'Missing Link' between the moderately effective 5mm Nichia type LEDs and the full fledged High Flux class emitters.
Because of the combined effectiveness, efficiency and cost factors, it fills a gap that has only been poorly filled in recent years.
This reviewer's personal keychain light for the past year has been LAMBDA Modified KeyMates- TurboLights using the first and second generation MJLEDs.
The introduction of the SMJLED simply makes a great upgrade even more effective...and efficient. Some of us miss the more neutral beam color of the earlier generation of MJLEDs, but extra output from the SMJLED (V3) more than makes up for this in most of the applications for so-modified lights are used.

The Venturetek manufactured Piggyback accessory system for the MAG® D-Size flashlights are a range of accessories that truly extend the functionality of the ubiquitous MAG-Lites beyond their ability to generate light. These accessories are modular and interchangeable. The three core products are the Piggyback, Piggyback Pepper Spray and the replacement tailcaps. The Piggyback is essentially a high quality CNC machined extension of the MAG-lite body that adds a hollow 5" long compartment to any D-cell MAG-lite. This compartment is capped by a Venturetek Replacement MAG tailcap that can include either a high quality liquid-filled compass or an ingenious hardened steel glass breaker. The contents of the sizable waterproof compartment are up to the end-user. A first aid kit, survival kit, smaller flashlight, knife, medicines or even flares may be enclosed. The standard Piggybacks may then be capped by either a compass for wayfinding or a professional grade glass breaker point- suitable for emergency breaching of automobile windows. We see the compass version as being attractive to the outdoors inclined, while the glass-breaker points are ideal for flashlights that are stored inside a motor vehicle. Police are often the first responders to a motor vehicle accident and since many in law enforcement prefer the MAG D-size flashlights, it stands to reason that the Venturetek Glass-breaker tailcap would be natural accessory for them. For citizens that may also prefer the MAG D-size flashlight in their cars, the same Glass-breaker tailcap could be a lifesaver in the event that a car window needed to be breached from within. For those that would prefer a Pepper spray capability on their flashlights, a special pepper spray Piggyback is available that will take refills of the end-users chosen type.

We found the Piggyback to be a useful accessory for the MAG-lite and especially for 2D sized lights. In addition to containing useful items, the extra length that results from the addition of a Piggyback also has the added benefit of making a flashlight longer- without making it much heavier. For those that simply love to use their MAG-lite for intimidation , the Piggyback turns any MAG into a lightweight baton or kabuton.
Due to the modularity of the system, an infinite number of Piggybacks can be attached in series to each other- producing a line of individual compartments and outlandishly long handled flashlights. The replacement tailcap for the Piggyback will only fit the Piggyback. For those that don't need a compartment but who wish to replace their flat MAG tailcaps with something different, then either the compass or glass-breaker point tailcaps are just the right solution. The compass version even allows the light to be stood on it's tail for ceiling bounce illumination. The Glass-Breaker version does not allow for this. A future Glass-breaker version is planned that will allow for the ceiling bounce tailcap functionality. The Piggybacks hold quite a lot of small stuff. The Glass breaker points were effective in breaking windows of everything from small sedans to full-sized pick-up trucks, vans and SUVs. The shorter point requires a decidedly more direct and perpendicular hit, while the long version tolerated more angular hits.Being that they're machined to obtuse angles, neither Glass-breaker tailcap was pointed enough to pierce flesh or tear up fabrics- a welcome feature in real-world scenarios. We did not evaluate or test the Pepper Spray version of the Piggyback.

The AstroArm Gemini proved to be a formidable adjustable arm support in all the trials we conducted. It works well for small to medium sized flashlights that do not exceed 7" in length or are heavier than 16oz. The clamping version has a large clamp with a 2" gape- making it suitable for attachment to metal posts, desks, work benches, automotive parts and any other solid object of no more than 2" in girth. The LocLine segmented arm has a strong natural tension that is part of the neck design. Provided that it's kept free of debris or oil, it will give long service without requiring any adjustment at all. Mounting flashlights is an intuitive procedure within the capability of almost everyone. Naturally, other objects may also be attached, extending the usefulness of the AstroArm Gemini further.
We appreciated the extra length of elastic cording and use of openable terminal clips- allowing us to shorten the elastic ties to suite our purpose.
The AstroArm Gemini was a handy tool for placing a light close-up to perform a circuit solder or for fly-tying . It absolutely shone as an illumination support in many automotive repair scenarios- acting like a third arm in several tricky situations.
This one product whose usefulness is limited only by one's imagination. We'd like to see a version that simply has a 1/4"X20 bushing at the bottom- which would make it a nifty addition to a table tripod or even the photographer's or videographer's studio lighting set-up.

1) A single CR123A battery fits perfectly inside the Magnum 1-Cell vault and a single AAA battery fits perfectly inside the Original 1-Cell vaults respectively with nice side clearance and a little room in the length. Two CR123A batteries fits perfectly inside the Trekker with enough room for a spacer as well as end-space. Note*The Original is .125mm too narrow to hold an 'N' cell battery.
2) I took the Wrack Works Battery Vaults to the YMCA with batteries inside them and left them at pool bottom for 1/2 hour, then took them into180ºf sauna. They're water tight and Sauna resistant ;-). Batteries plus a tiny piece of tissue paper in each vault were 100% DRY!
3)We froze them with batteries inside in an ice cube tray for 3 days and thawed them for 3 hrs. The seals did not crack and they continued to be waterproof
4) No data available for electrical conductivity, melting point or crush force resistance.
These are very nicely made in the USA from solid aluminum bar stock.

Excellent . Performs the task of joining a flashlight of a given maximum diameter to a bicycle handlebar, walking stick and scooter post with no slipping or accidental loosening of the Velcro straps. Tension remains the same even after repeated use. There is no binding, sticking , tearing or fraying whatsoever. The pliant rubber conforms to the diameter and shape of the respective tubes easily - providing a secure grip with no gaps or opportunity for slippage. 5 points

Ease of Use
Excellent . Requires very little learning if any. Intuitive functional model. No cognitive overhead . A flashlight of the appropriate length and girth is inserted tail-first into the main compartment and the cover flap is pulled over the head and attached to the holster via a medium duty Velcro closure.
Spare AA batteries are inserted from either the top or bottom openings of side-mounted heavy duty elastic tubes that securely clinch them and prevent them from falling out.
For belt carry, a belt may either be passed through the snap-closure belt loop or the loop may be opened and passed over a closed belt or strap up to 2.75" wide.
For desktop use, the belt loop snap is opened and the metal core loop easily forced open to create an 'A' shaped stand. The reflective cover flap is then either positioned to reflect light from a mounted light towards a table surface at an angle, or it may be folded back to provide clearance for direct illumination in an upward pointed direction.- 5 points

Task performance optimization
Excellent . Performs the task of securely storing a flashlight of a dimension to a person. The stiffened opening to the main compartment allows for quick one-handed insertion. Deployment is also swift and requires only one hand. Velcro closure is secure and easy to use with one hand and in the dark- though it is not quiet. Batteries are fairly easy to insert though doing so requires two hands. Attachment to belts and straps is quick, easy and thanks to a strong snap closure- secure
High quality materials, fit and finish (smooth reinforced edges) exude luxury and minimize accidental snagging or binding.
Used as a stand, the Lite Holster provided an ideal emergency or ad hoc flat surface support for very usable desktop illumination at a close range of a few inches to about 2 feet.
It was excellent for illuminating half an automobile for a night-time tire change (tarmac surface). In a camping trial scenario- it provided a satisfactory angle of illumination for lighting campfire in being built, a tent erected and inside an erected tent it was quite usable for reflecting the beam from the roof and side of a tent for interior illumination.

Adaptability
The Lite Holster is specifically designed for flashlights conforming to a specific set of dimensions. The sample we received was modified by us. By cutting a 'V' shaped hole into the bottom of the main compartment we managed to accommodate a more advanced version of the flashlight than the one for which the Lite Holster was originally designed. This newer model light has a rubberized tail switch that adds .5" or 1.5cm to the compartment length requirement. Nonetheless, the Lite Holster successfully hosted this longer light without any indication that it would fall through, tear, wobble or fail. 4.5 points

Excellent. Other than the aforementioned need for modification- the Lite Holster functions perfectly with the Streamlight Jr LED and any light of a similar dimension. They allow for a high degree of mobility and object accessibility. These are are high value items that are suitable accessories for personal and professional use. Utilitarian in build, they lack superfluity nor do they allude to fashion in deference to durablity or usability. These are the ideal accessories for workers of all persuasions that must have relaible neck-worn retention of thier valuables or tools. They are also ideal for recreational activities where rough use would render lighter duty alternatives useless.

Very Good. These are top quality personal item retention lanyards that are designed to minimize property loss while protecting user safety through the use of breakaways. Each model is designed for a specific range of end-uses . The Classic is a general purpose and survival lanyard that includes a highly functional but lightweight flashlight and small but very useful folding knife. A scream-whistle is built into the fastex connector.The Rattlesnake Cammo is similar to the Classic but has the added feature of including a 2.5 inch size adjuster that allows for lanyard size adjustment to suite individuals with varied torso lengths or with greater/lesser neck sizes.It also features a new 'skeletonized' fastex buckle and tactical black D-ring. Included are a SneakLight and the customary CooLanyard Classic whistle. Custom size adjuster sections are available as optional accessories (by special order).The Cell-phone neck strap features an innovative quick-release fashioned from a stock break-away with swivel ends.The Neck Stretcher is comprised of two sections- a lower section of matching coiled polymer cords and an upper section of heavy duty braided nylon cords. The sections are connected with matching breakaways, allowing for color mixing as well as length extension and specialized attachment options. The Neck Stretcher allows for very long reach- making suitable as a weapon or high value tool retention accessory (mounted as a waist lanyard) but risky in that it could be a hazard if improperly used as a neck lanyard 4.75 points cumulative score/5.0 points for the Rattlesnake Cammo model.

Durability
Long term tests have not been done. First impression suggest that durability will on average be excellent but may vary depending on environmental conditions as well as end-user care. Product is waterproof and washable with ordinary soap detergent. Replacement frequency will depend on variables such as frequency of dismantling / re-assembly, roughness of use, exposure to UV and heat/cold as well as other unpredictable factors. Based on continuous everyday use for 2 weeks, and assuming that the Nylon fabric used is Cordura brand, we have provisionally given this group of products a durability rating of 5 points (cumulative score for all designs).*Breakaways may eventually wear out and abrasion and use may eventually weaken cord strength as well as assembly joints.
