Form Factor & Build
|
1-
The TnC Hyper-Lux V is a sleek post-modern interpretation
of the classic flashlight form. The Hyper-Lux V uses a 5Watt
Luxeon LED powered by 3,CR123A Lithium batteries or rechargeable
equivilants. The Hyper-Lux V is a custom machined limited edition
flashlight that exudes high quality fabrication and attention
to detail. As with other works from this maker, it lacks superfluity
or gratuitous decorativeness – embellishments that would
otherwise detract from its classy look and feel.
2- The flashlight is radially symmetrical
and the head is obviously wider in diameter from the body.
3- Though simple in shape, the Hyper-Lux V profile
is interesting to behold. Thanks to cooling fins that are
cut into the head as well as bands of elegant diagonal knurling
along the body and tail pieces– the light has a sculptural
look that sets it apart from mass produced flashlights in
it’s size class.
4- The Hyper-Lux V is a full hand light. It’s
ideal for situations where the maximum output combined with
a moderate run-time are paramount and where keychain sized
pocketability is of lesser importance. This makes it useful
for individuals with large hands as well as for users preferring
the heft of the Hyper-Lux V over a smaller and lighter tool.
5- Along the body, circumferential grooves
are separated by a band of aggressive diagonal knurling. These
are framed by areas of smooth aluminum that show only the
slightest artifacts of CNC machining lines- called micro-grooves.
These not only add a satin sheen to the plain sections but
in addition they also provide subtle grip enhancement, even
for bare hands.
6- The aluminum wall thickness of the battery
tube is 2.5 mm.
7- All sections are crafted with a jeweler’s
precision and fit together very precisely with a smooth threading
action. One notices from taking the Hyper-Lux V apart that it
is a tool made with high precision engineering.
8- The limited edition production sample
that we evaluated was made from aircraft aluminum sporting
a clear type II hard anodizing on the outside and throughout
the inside. This anodizing should be effective against casual
abrasion and corrosion though it is less effective than type
III Hard anodizing.
9- There is no 'play' or rattle anywhere
in the Hyper-Lux V. Substantial 'O' ring seals at all junctions
between sections provide a snug fit as well as a seal against
the elements- especially water. An additional 'O' ring seal
prevents water from entering the bezel through the front lens.

| Ergonomics
& Mount Options |
1-
The flashlight is ambidextrous.
2- The Hyper-Lux V allows for single-handed On/Off
operation though the use of a push button momentary On, click
On/Off tail switch. Alternatively, the tail switch may also
be used for twist On/Off activation.
3- Battery changes are effected through removal
of the tailcap -an action that can either be performed with
one or both hands-though two handed battery changes are clearly
easier.
4- No lanyard attachment point exists on the
tailcap, though one is envisioned for upcoming releases. |
| Affordances |
1-
Stowage- No sheath, case or holster is offered, though
custom or commercially available third party options may exist.
2-Basic activation- In normal use, light
emits from the front of the flashlight when activation occurs
through either a partial pressing of the Kroll pushbutton
switch (momentary On) or through a full pressing of the switch.
In momentary mode, releasing the switch turns the light Off.
In click mode, re-pressing the switch will turn the light
off.
3-The head section is finely threaded to
the body section, allowing for easy access to the enclosed
LED module or ‘sandwich’. The front bezel is threaded
to the head and allows for access to the lens and its ‘O’ring.
Taking these components apart requires no specialized tools
or skills.
4- The removable tailpiece protects the battery
compartment from the environment by a single heavy 'O' ring.
Removing the tailpiece allows for battery replacement. Contact
pressure with the battery is furnished by a coiled spring
in the tailpiece. Replacement ‘O’ rings and and
springs are available.

| Human
Factors & Usability |
1-The
Hyper-Lux V’s On/Off functionality is standard and fundamentally
as simple to activate as any of several flashlights of its
genre. There is a small tendency to ‘poke’ at the
switch since its inset into the tailcap, but momentary activation
requires just a gentle poke of the pad of the first finger
or thumb to quickly make the Hyper-Lux V emit sudden blasts of
light.
2- Due to the inset button, the Hyper-Lux V
can be stood on its tail for either ceiling bounce or candle
mode use. Due to its intense brightness, a Hyper-Lux V used in
ceiling bounce mode behaves like a lantern- effectively casting
a bright blanket of light throughout a room
3- We didn’t perform physical tests
but judged that the combination of grooves and diagonally
patterned knurling would be very effective in preventing hand
slippage and loss in most situations, even with wet hands.
More aggressive knurling than the Hyper-Lux V’s exists
in premium flashlights, but none that we’ve sampled
equal it for usability combined with stylishness. Such attention
to ergonomic and aesthetic details is noteworthy of the Hyper-Lux V,
especially when contrasted with mass-produced utility flashlights
that provide merely cosmetic knurling or knurling that is
better suited to military or law-enforcement specifications.
4- The TnC Hyper-Lux V is a light that belongs
anywhere that a heavy duty and bright light is needed. As
such, this it highly versatile for many end-uses including:
law enforcement, military, security , search and rescue ,
inspection , boating, outdoor sports, tool-box, EMS, underwater,
overwater and potentially- firearms use as well. The great
advantage of the Hyper-Lux V is that it can be used instead much
bulkier lights to give a premium quality of illumination at
a minimized weight and form-factor.

| Beam
Quality & Characteristics |
1-
The smooth parabolic reflector of the Hyper-Lux V creates a circular
combination beam that is a broad flood of light pierced by a
focused circular hotspot at its center. This is a typical beam
‘profile’ for Luxeon emitters used in combination
with parabolic reflectors.
2- The wide-angled round-shaped beam is excellent
for general searching and its hotspot is bright and focused
enough to create extremely bright direct illumination in a large
space as well as delivering very bright light in many outdoor
situations either at close range or over a distance of nearly
200’.
3-The Hyper-Lux V creates a subject illumination
in a category that we've codified as a highly Context
Inclusive Illumination Window (CIIW) as compared with
a Context Exclusive Illumination Window (CEIW)
(*5)
4- For one test, we used the Hyper-Lux V to illuminate
the entire side of a medium sized single family home without
any need for ‘scanning’. The Hyper-Lux V acted like
a much larger search lantern throwing a large spot of light
onto the center of the house with a respectably bright corona
lighting the surrounding area.
5- There is no unevenness in the beam's tonal
gradation. A piercingly bright circular hotspot surrounded by
a very broad and uniform disc or 'corona' of peripheral light
bathes objects and scenes with pristine daylight. There is no
light in it’s class that produces so wide, bright and
truly white a beam.
6- Even considering it’s conservative
runtime the Hyper-Lux V is a reliable powerhouse altertnative to
lights costing twice as much and it accomplishes this feat with
sleeker styling and more visible craftsmanship.
7-To test the throw of the Hyper-Lux V, we
conducted a Maximum Distance for Object Identification
or MDOI (*2) trial and managed to confidently differentiate
our test subject (a Black 33 Gallon (124Litre) Trash Bag) from
its immediate surroundings, from as far away as 165
feet (xxx Meters) with the subject area in near total
darkness and the evaluators and flashlight in a moderate level
of street sodium vapor ambient lighting (RH=58% at 72ºf). This
test simulated a person searching for an object of known size
-a briefcase for example- but situated in a leafy camouflaged
setting, such as dense underbrush for example. From 165 feet
away (xxx Meters), the Hyper-Lux V positively lit up the vegetation
surrounding our subject enough to clearly distinguish it from
the Black 33 Gallon (124Litre) Trash Bag, which lay on the ground.
The estimated contrast ratio was 2:1

The color
chart tests photographed with a digital camera set for Daylight
White Balance and exposure set- to properly expose the gray
areas of the chart to 50% or Zone V- 'Mid-tone Gray', revealed
a color temperature of roughly 5,400ºK. Comparing the Hyper-Lux V
chart photograph with a flash (White Balance set to 'Flash')
exposure of the same chart reveals a nearly imperceptible bias
to blue. This makes it useful in situations demanding the highest
fidelity color differentiation. The TnC Hyper-Lux V is too close
to Daylight to benefit from filtration.

| Brightness |
The
TnC Hyper-Lux V scored Maximum Distance
for Object Identification or MDOI at 165 feet -more
than adequate for general searching or navigation and sufficient
for tasks with which larger and more powerful lights are typically
associated -such as tactical or emergencies covering a wide
field. Unfortunately, the Hyper-Lux V’s close range
wide-angle brightness is offset by a single brightness setting
that consequently allows for a full High runtime of around
1Hr. While sufficient for most short-use tasks and short-run
emergencies, it’s not quite long enough to serve in
emergencies that may be longer than one hour. After the initial
hour, the Hyper-Lux V delivers a somewhat lower output for
another hour and 30 minutes. As a result, back-up replacement
batteries are advised for extended duration use.

(*2) Maximum Distance for Object
Identification (MDOI). The maximum distance that
a person without the aid of magnification-can with normal
or corrected vision, under a given ambient level of light,
identify an object of known size, and clearly distinguish
it from its surroundings. We have tentatively identified the
following scenarios for such measures:
- A single average sized person/body identification scenario
- Urban (city, inside buildings, dark alley, lit streets)
- Rural (countryside,farm residential backyard)
- Environmental (dessert, woods, wetlands, over water)
- Natural & manmade disaster (fire, flood/mudslide,earthquake,
hurricane /tornado,bombing scene, collapsed structure
etc)
- Small Inanimate Object (smaller than a shoe-box)
- Medium Inanimate Object (Black Plastic 33 Gallon (124Litre)
Garbage Bag stuffed with a big sleeping bag)
(*3) Usability testing results - in progress.
(*5) Context Inclusive Illumination
Window (CIIW) as compared with a Context
Exclusive Illumination Window (CEIW)
.
- CIIW describes a subject illumination
paradigm wherein the illumination target is the focus of
the beam's brightest disc or 'Hotspot' and peripheral objects
to the target are more dimly illuminated in a larger disc
that surrounds the focus or hotspot. This outer region is
also referred to as a corona or penumbra.
- CEIW describes a subject illumination
paradigm wherein the illumination target is the focus of
the beam's brightest disc or 'Hotspot' and peripheral objects
to the target are not sufficiently illuminated
to be easily discernable at the periphery
of subject beam's focus or hotspot.
