Form Factor & Build

1-Diminutive representation of the classic flashlight form. Geometry is a radially symmetrical round cross-section with elastomer accents
2-Head of Light is wider than the body & tail-piece which are almost the same diameter.
3-The flashlight is a lightweight Key chain class pocket light
4-Usable by persons of all hand sizes
5-Especially friendly to persons with very small hands but large enough to be manipulateable by large handed individuals as well
6-The aluminum wall thickness of the battery tube is 1.0 mm.
7-All sections fit together well with fairly smooth threading action.
8-Black Type II (glossy) anodizing on the outside and inside the battery compartment offers protection against corrosion.
9-There is no battery rattle. 'O' ring seals provide a snug fit and a light seal against the elements- especially water.
10-A distinctive head section makes indexing quick and easy.
11-There is no roll prevention
12-Tail section does not allow for self supported ceiling bounce or candle modes without modification.*

Ergonomics & Mount Options

1- Ambidextrous.
2- Depending on the size of the user's hands, this light may either fit in a small child's hand or be a finger tip light for someone with very large hands. Since it is intended to be attached to a key-ring, it's typically 'extended' in form to include the key's or other object or tether to which it may become attached.
3- A plastic momentary On tail switch at the end of the tail-cap allows for simple toggling activation of the light when the tail cap is turned to nearly On position. This is useful for short On/Off bursts of light such might be used for signaling or brief momentary use for searching
4- Turning the tail cap fully clockwise activates the constant On and re-turning it clockwise turns it back Off. a 360º anticlockwise rotation locks the tail cap to prevent accidental activation.
5-A provision for lanyard or key ring is built in as a strong wire shaped like a pail handle- that is attached to the plastic push button. This wire ring may be removed or detached to allow the threading of another ring/clip or other terminal hardware.

Affordances

1- Stowage- Non included. Intended for a wide variety of user selected stowage options
2 - Activation- In normal use, light emits from the front of the flashlight when activation occurs through either a partial depression of the tail cap button or a full rotation of the tail cap Activation feedback is provided through a very slight resistance in the button. De-activation is implemented through a reversal of the process. No sound is made through activation/de-activation (Fully Covert Action)
3-The front bezel is threaded and cemented to the body section- preventing user accessibility to the emitter module enclosed in the head section . The reflector and lens seem permanently secured to the bezel and seem not to be user serviceable. A single 'O'ring protects the head section and LED module from the environment.
4-
The removable tailpiece allows for access to the battery compartment for replacements. The battery compartment is protected from the environment by an 'O' ring attached to the body section.

Human Factors & Usability

1-Glossy anodizing ( Satin for other colors) and smoothened contours of the Dorcy1LED1AAA give the surface a 'classy' touch though the elastomer accents give it more of an industrial chic look.
2-The 'DORCY' logo is printed in embossed into the elastomer body sleeve (earlier iterations lacked this branding element on the sleeve but had it faintly engraved on the body tube instead.
3- The elastomer sleeve makes the light gripable.
4- This light is a member of the largest of the key ring lights-allowing it to bridge the gap between true fingertip key ring lights and the larger and heavier pocket lights that are typically heavier and may be bulkier than the Dorcy1LED1AAA .
5-The toggling tail cap switch activation procedure is very sensitive -requiring the lightest touch to activate it
6- The tail cap twisting process is similarly easy and sensitive
7- Though this flashlight is clearly aimed at being attached to a key ring, it may well find itself in any of a number of places that a diminutive, handy and accessible flashlightmight want to be
8- The tail cap button is slightly convex, preventing it from standing on end, but a few minutes with a file can easily flatten it to extend its usefulness.
9-The emitter module is not user accessible, unless the bezel is removed with a force that requires the use of a vice-grip. Once detached from the body tube, the emitter module may be removed and the emitter abraded to ameliorate chromatic and other anomalies inherit in the beam.
10- Useful bilingual documentation printed on the blister pack insert, instructs on battery replacement, use, specifications and warranty. The fine-print text might be too small for some people to read without the aid of magnification.

Beam Quality & Characteristics 1- The reflector of the Dorcy1LED1AAA creates a circular beam that is a wide flood of light progressively focused to a round hotspot in its center. This progressive transition occurs as a result of a series of concentric rings. The amelioration of the beam is affected through a light abrasion of the emitter.
2- The round-shaped beam is satisfactorily bright and wide for close-up searching and is bright and focused enough to create a low level of room/tent/chamber lighting - especially in small rooms with light colored walls and ceiling.
3-The Dorcy1LED1AAA creates a subject illumination in a category that we've codified as a highly Context Inclusive Illumination Window (CEIW) as contrasted with a Context Exclusive Illumination Window (CIIW) (*5)
4- For one test, we used the Dorcy1LED1AAA in hand and walked around a darkened home. It fairly well illuminated entire hallways and rooms and delivered enough light to allow for routine bathroom as well as bedroom activities. It is an excellent low-cost emergency flashlight.
5- Thanks to its reflector and circuitry, the Dorcy1LED1AAA seems to put out more light in a wider beam than one might expect from a 1LED1AAA flashlight
6- Key to the exceptional usability of this product is the whiteness of the resulting beam - especially after the aforementioned amelioration has been applied. For an effective aftermarket beam ameloration you might try this process on a spare Dorcy 1 X AAA flashlight >Softening the Dorcy 1XAAA Beam
7-It is not intended or recommended for use in bare-bulb mode, though it is bright enough in some circumstances to be used in ceiling bounce mode (tail cap flattening required)
8-This is not a far throwing beam and is useful for outdoor illumination distances of no more than 15-20 feet, but is preferred in situations where a very bright light at close proximity may hamper low-light vision adaptedness.
9- It excels in small enclosed spaces, especially ones with light colored walls and ceilings.

Light Quality The color chart tests photographed with a digital camera set for Daylight White Balance and exposure set- to properly expose the gray areas of the chart to 50% or Zone V- 'Mid-tone Gray', revealed a color temperature of roughly 5,600ºK. Comparing the Dorcy1LED1AAA chart photograph with a flash (White Balance set to 'Flash') exposure of the same chart reveals a bias to blue. This makes it useful in situations that do not demand high color differentiation. There are chromatic variances across the beam's profile- but these are easily ameliorated through diffusion of abrasion of the emitter.

Brightness

The Dorcy1LED1AAA scored Maximum Distance for Object Identification or MDOI at 20 feet -more than adequate for close-up navigation and occasional 'point-blank' searching. It's bright enough for long enough to be ideally suited to emergencies and situations where a number of such lights may be scattered throughout a home, car or carried by employees, team members or family.

Conclusions

1- At the time of this review, we judged the Dorcy1LED1AAA to be an ideal close-up everyday or emergency flashlight.
2- It is a substantial improvement in beam brightness and color, bulb longevity and battery life to either the time honored incandescent from which it descended or any number of contemporaries that may still use bluish emitters or depend on expensive or hard to find batteries.
3- It is thoughtfully designed for a range of customers - being offered in a range of colors from the stylish black on black that we reviewed to the range of anodizing colors that should make it appealing to all genders and ages.
4- The improvement in LED color produced by the Dorcy1LED1AAA's LED emitter over legacy 5mm Nichia emitters is a bonus to both experienced as well as neophyte users of these small LED flashlights.
5- The fact that the Dorcy1LED1AAA uses commonly available size AAA batteries makes it highly accessible to users worldwide. Given the growing popularity and availability of rechargeable AAA batteries, the Dorcy1LED1AAA also gets bonus points as an environmentally sustainable and responsible flashlight option. As such, it makes a perfect gift for recipients that are inclined to use rechargeable rather than disposable batteries.
6- The manufacturers of the Dorcy1LED1AAA- package the flashlight in a 'pilferage resistant' sealed plastic display package that - makes it suitable for personal purchase or casual gift giving. It deserves to be marketed in more upscale packaging for gift giving purposes. The addition of a lightweight wrist or neck lanyard would simplify the carry of this light around the neck- where it is very handily situated for tasks around a house, boat or campsite.
7-Value. The field of small key chain sized lights is burgeoning and such lights exist in prices ranging from one dollar to a hundred dollars or more. The Dorcy1LED1AAA is outstanding as a value leader in its class and currently rates 4.75 stars out of a possible 5 stars.
Our gripes were... A) Beam color anomalies can be more easily eliminated in manufacture than by the customer B) A nearly stand-up capable tail cap button requires filing down for extended functionality

4.75 Stars-Highly Recommended

Pros= Exceptional brightness/runtime and beam color for its price-point |Useful combination light beam| Light weight form-factor | Charming diminutive interpretation of a classic tool |Competitively priced|Useful combination tail switch| Much better than average Warranty | Astute choice of battery type.
Cons= | Cannot stand up on its tail without modification| Inaccessible bezel/optics combination makes emitter modification a challenge | Not as widely available as it might otherwise be

Footnotes:

(*1) Medium Men's glove size- Also, a Standardized Flashlight Hand Size Metric (SFHSM)

  Small A-B = 4.5" or Shorter
  Medium A-B = 4.5"-5"
  Large A-B = 5"-6"
  X-Large A-B = 6" and Longer

(*2) Maximum Distance for Object Identification (MDOI). The maximum distance that a person without the aid of magnification-can with normal or corrected vision, under a given ambient level of light, identify an object of known size, and clearly distinguish it from its surroundings. We have tentatively identified the following scenarios for such measures:

  • A single average sized person/body identification scenario
    • Urban (city, inside buildings, dark alley, lit streets)
    • Rural (countryside,farm residential backyard)
    • Environmental (dessert, woods, wetlands, over water)
    • Natural & manmade disaster (fire, flood/mudslide,earthquake, hurricane /tornado,bombing scene, collapsed structure etc)
  • Small Inanimate Object (smaller than a shoe-box)
  • Medium Inanimate Object (Black Plastic 33 Gallon (124Litre) Garbage Bag stuffed with a big sleeping bag)

(*5) Context Inclusive Illumination Window (CIIW) as compared with a Context Exclusive Illumination Window (CEIW) .

  • CIIW describes a subject illumination paradigm wherein the illumination target is the focus of the beam's brightest disc or 'Hotspot' and peripheral objects to the target are more dimly illuminated in a larger disc that surrounds the focus or hotspot. This outer region is also referred to as a corona or penumbra.
  • CEIW describes a subject illumination paradigm wherein the illumination target is the focus of the beam's brightest disc or 'Hotspot' and peripheral objects to the target are not sufficiently illuminated to be easily discernable at the periphery of subject beam's focus or hotspot.
